- At the eleventh hour the bid to appoint a new eThekwini mayor grinded to a halt and now we know why
- The embattled Zandile Gumede has withdrawn her imposed resignation of the KZN city
- It appears that Gumede is gearing up for a showdown with ANC leadership in the area
Zandile Gumede has done a u-turn and withdrawn her resignation as eThekwini mayor.
Briefly.co.za previously reported that the ANC had been exerting extreme pressure on Gumede to step down, citing incompetence.
Now Gumede has apparently had a change of heart, withdrawing her resignation only a day before the new executive was meant to be ushered in.
IOL reports that Gumede has set up a showdown with ANC leadership, similar to what Patricia De Lille had with the Democratic Alliance when she was forced to step down.
The ANC has confirmed this latest development in the matter facing the KwaZulu-Natal government, commenting that:
"The African National Congress (ANC) in Kwazulu-natal would like to confirm that eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede has withdrawn her resignation letter. The ANC Provincial Working Committee will reflect on this matter and the outcome would be communicated accordingly."
eNCA reports that news of this decision had come through early this morning and that Gumede was adamant she had performed well.
Facing charges of corruption and fraud, it will be interesting to see how this politician intends to defend her position at the helm of Durban's government.
