“Sankofa. The album. The doccie. The archive. The exhibit. Coming to you in 2021. Take care of yourselves because we are going back for what’s ours."
'Sankofa' means 'Go back and get it'. The language is native to Ghana. Sankofa will be Mazwai's latest solo album since her last offering in 2016. She has been vocal about how artists in Africa need to take control of their own legacy by creating archives.
She went on to add that she wants to immortalise her legacy with these archives:
"I will not disappear. I will be seen beyond my time here. Sankofa!"
