Somizi told fans of his mother's passing through a poignant tweet.
He wrote, "My tree has fallen. Lala (Sleep) Ma."
Somizi's husband, Mohale, asked fans for prayers as he pointed out that he'd never seen Somizi so devastated.
He said, "I've never seem my husband like this. Please pray for us guys, I really need to be 3strong for him."
The hashtag #RIPMaryTwala trended for most of the day as people payed tribute to the veteran performer.
