The politician was born on 15th March 1975 in Port Shepstone, Natal, South Africa. He is a descendant of the Madikizela clan and is the late Winnie Mandela’s nephew.

The politician's public profile had previously shown that he attended Asoka Secondary School but dropped out in 1991. He then moved to Cape Town in 1998 to stay with his brother, who helped him enroll in a computer course. The politician later enrolled at UNISA to pursue a Bcom degree in human resource management, but this claim turned out to be a lie.

Bonginkosi Madikizela qualifications controversy

The Mzansi politician came under harsh scrutiny in April 2021 after it was alleged that he lied about graduating with a Bcom degree. This led to his suspension as MEC for Transport and Public works for 14 days from 15th April 2021 to allow the DA’s Federal Legal Commission to carry out its investigations.

He also voluntarily stepped aside as the DA’s Western Cape provincial leader for two weeks, and his deputy Albert Fritz became the acting provincial leader.
