Mzwakhe Mbuli, a South African poet and Mbaqanga singer, also served as a Deacon at the Apostolic Faith Mission Church in Naledi, Soweto. Born on August 1, 1959, in Sophiatown, he inherited musical skills from his father, a mbube singer, who taught him traditional songs and took him to mbube sessions.

He developed a passion for poetry after hearing praise poets perform for visiting kings and attended Zulu dance festivals and music events as a youth.

The 1976 Soweto Uprising was pivotal in shaping his views and inspiring his poetry, especially after his school strike following the deaths of fellow students. Mbuli began his professional career in 1979, performing for COSAS as part of the Khuyhangano group.
