How to deal with survivor's guilt

Speaking to Briefly News, grief counsellor Paula Quinsee shared how to deal with survivor's guilt.

She said survivor's guilt happens when someone feels grateful to be alive but also sad that other's weren't as fortunate. Paula Quinsee proposed that individuals who find themselves in such situations should embrace both feelings and to cope by honouring survival.

"Survivor’s guilt stems from gratitude for being alive with the grief and sadness that others were lost and can cause additional stress in an already tough situation. There are several ways to address this such as acknowledging that feeling both relief and sorrow is normal, finding ways to acknowledge that surviving is a positive a can be honoured through re-aligning with one’s values and purpose in life," Quinsee explained.

Paula Quinsee shared that it can help to go to therapy or support groups. She shared the advantages of each option, sharing that support groups are a reminder that one's situation isn't unique to them.
