A popular Mexican comedian has been killed on camera in front of hundreds of online viewers. Cesar Gastelum, a TikTok creator with nearly 600,000 followers known for his comedy content, was fatally shot on Tuesday evening while livestreaming outside a fast-food restaurant in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state. Local authorities have confirmed his death and said a large-scale security operation was launched in the area shortly afterwards.

Footage from the broadcast, reviewed by Reuters, captured the moment two individuals on a motorcycle pulled up close to Gastelum and his companions. Both riders wore helmets. The motorcycle's driver then appeared to open fire directly at Gastelum before the pair fled the scene.

Violence in Culiacan

Culiacan has been a flashpoint for organised crime for years. Rival criminal factions have waged a bloody fight for territorial control in the city, and a succession of high-profile violent incidents has made Sinaloa one of Mexico's most dangerous states. Gastelum's killing is the latest in a string of attacks that have gripped the region.

A second influencer shot live on TikTok

Gastelum's death has drawn immediate comparisons to the murder of beauty influencer Valeria Marquez, who was 23 years old when she was shot inside her workplace, a salon in Zapopan, Jalisco, in May 2025, also during a live TikTok broadcast. Prosecutors said a man entered the premises and opened fire, and the case was subsequently investigated under femicide protocols.

Mexican authorities announced a major breakthrough in July when Ramon Angel Alvarez Ayala, known by the alias "El R-1," was arrested in Jalisco. Security minister Omar Garcia Harfuch identified Alvarez Ayala as the head of a criminal cell linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Authorities connected him to Marquez's killing as well as to the November 2025 murder of Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo, alleging he ordered and financed that attack.
