Three of South Africa's most celebrated music figures have joined forces to build a lifeline for artists in crisis. On 25 August 2026, DJ Tira, DJ Merlon and Black Coffee officially launched the Art Legacy Fund, an initiative designed to provide a financial safety net for creatives navigating hardship brought on by health challenges, mental health struggles or other unforeseen life events.
Speaking at the launch, Black Coffee opened up about what personally drew him to the cause, pointing to L'vovo's widely circulated interview as a turning point.
"I just sat there wondering how we can help without it being personal. How can we create structures where if someone has a problem like that and they need assistance, why don't you create a fund that can come and assist?" he said.
L'vovo's story that moved a nation
The Kwaito legend had spoken candidly about the devastating impact of his stroke in 2022, a health crisis that reshaped his life and visibly changed his appearance. During the Gagasi FM interview that gripped Mzansi, he struggled to contain his emotions.

"I am getting emotional because I know where I come from and the hardships that I faced. I do not know how I got here, but my faith in God allowed me to be here today."
The Bayangsukela hitmaker also described how people around him disappeared when he hit rock bottom, but leaned on his belief that God would carry him through. His story moved the public so deeply that a fundraising campaign was launched in his support shortly after the interview went viral, where he received over R280,000 in donations.

A broader vision for SA's creative industry**
The Art Legacy Fund is described as the first step in a wider programme of support structures for South African creatives. Working with The Black Coffee Foundation, the fund identifies practical ways to support artists in need, with the long-term goal of helping them rebuild sustainable careers and continue contributing to the country's cultural fabric.
The launch came with immediate momentum, as the fund successfully raised over R3 million in donations to get its work off the ground.
Its arrival is timely. The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture has faced sustained criticism over its perceived failure to adequately support artists in distress.

L'vovo's story, alongside those of many other creatives who have lost their livelihoods to illness, financial ruin or personal crisis, underscored the urgent need for exactly the kind of independent structure the Art Legacy Fund now represents.
