His two-word response, "Ngemali yenu," meaning "with your money," cut straight to the point and lit up the timeline.

The Newsday report was based on the Electoral Commission of South Africa's (IEC) Political Party Funding reports, which are published quarterly under the Political Party Funding Act, which came into effect on 1 April 2021. Under the legislation, political parties, independent candidates, and independent representatives must disclose all private donations above R200,000 within a financial year, including cumulative contributions from the same donor that collectively cross that threshold.

The figures showed that over the past five years, le Roux had contributed more than R208 million to the DA, making him the largest individual donor to any single political party on record.

Dhlomo's implication was clear: ordinary Capitec account holders, including those who would never vote DA, were inadvertently funding the party through their banking relationship. The post sparked a sharp debate across X about the ethics of business owners using company profits to fund political parties.

It is worth noting that the law caps donations from a single donor to any one party at R30 million per financial year, and donors themselves must independently report contributions to the IEC within 30 days.
