Poet, singer and Johannesburg mayoral hopeful Ntsiki Mazwai turned heads on Thursday, 19 September 2026, after publicly calling out Radio 702 for leaving her out of its Johannesburg Mayoral Candidate Debate. Tagging fellow candidate Gndzongana in her post, she wrote: "So Vele we were excluded @gndzongana Interesting" — a short but pointed response to the station's coverage ahead of the November 4th local elections.

Who joined the 702 debate?

Radio 702 hosted four mayoral contenders for the city of Johannesburg: Ayanda Allie from ActionSA, Lukhona Mnguni from Rise Mzansi, Kenny Kunene from the Patriotic Alliance, and Nobuntu Hlazo-Webster from BOSA. Mazwai, who has been campaigning as a mayoral candidate, was conspicuously absent from the line-up, along with Gndzongana.

Mzansi reacts to Ntsiki's exclusion

Speaking to Briefly News journalist Tayananiswa Zvikaramba, Ntsiki Mazwai shared that one of her priorities is to fix Johannesburg’s finances by identifying waste, improving revenue collection, rebuilding public trust in service delivery, and attracting foreign investment through targeted incentives.

“The second one would be, obviously, that Joburg’s financial position is not looking attractive at the moment. So, in the first 30 days, I would definitely be having a Financial Indaba for Johannesburg and speaking to all the financial teams to see where we are losing money and wasting money, and where we can generate our revenue," Ntsiki Mazwai said.
