Thembi Nyandeni Clarifies She Is Not Replacing Connie Chiume in 'Blood Legacy' Season 2

Veteran actress Thembi Nyandeni has pushed back against speculation that she is filling the void left by the late Connie Chiume in the second season of Netflix's Blood Legacy. The former Isibaya star made her position clear, saying she came to the show on her own terms.
Nyandeni joins the new season as MaNdlovu, the paternal aunt of the Ndlovu siblings, as the family faces mounting tensions over the future of its empire. The role is separate from the one Chiume played in the first season. Chiume, who passed away in August 2024, portrayed matriarch Madlamini Ndlovu, the mother of siblings Khanyi (Xolile Tshabalala), Mandla (Buyile Madlala) and Siya (Mike Ndlangamandla).
"I'm not replacing anybody. I saw somewhere that I'm replacing so and so — I'm not here as a replacement," Nyandeni told News24. "I didn't replace anybody. Instead, I'm here to elevate the show in my way."
The comparison stung, she said, because of the bond she shared with Chiume.

"That was my sister that everyone saw in season one. I'm not replacing my sister."
Nyandeni nervous joining an established cast
Despite her long career in South African television, Nyandeni admitted the experience of walking into an already successful production brought its own anxieties. She had not watched Blood Legacy before being offered the role, so she sat down and watched the entire first season to understand the world she was stepping into.
"There was no pressure, but you get nervous in each and every role you take on, especially because this one was already established. I joined an existing cast," she said.
The returning cast members helped ease the transition. Whenever she needed to understand the relationships or storylines better, her co-stars were on hand to guide her.
"They were helpful. All of them. When I didn't understand certain things, I asked, 'Guys, what's happening here?' They said, 'OK, we'll show you.'"
Nyandeni joins new addition Amanda Seome, who plays Hlangiwe, as one of the fresh faces in season two.
MaNdlovu steps in to fix the Ndlovu family
Nyandeni described her character as someone who confronts problems head-on rather than allowing them to fester. MaNdlovu enters a family riddled with betrayal, jealousy, and hidden struggles, including drug use taking place without the elders' knowledge.
"My character, as you've said, is a fixer; I'm here because there's a problem," she said. "In each and every family, there is a problem, and there's a grown-up that's supposed to come in and fix things."
The scale of what MaNdlovu walks into is significant.
"There are secrets in this family, big, big secrets," Nyandeni said. "There's evilness in this family, among the children, you know, there's hatred among the children, you know, there's drugs that are happening behind our backs."
Her approach, she explained, is grounded in practicality.
"I'm a realistic person. When things are wrong, we need to sit down and fix them."
The 20-episode second season of Blood Legacy, which follows the Ndlovu family's fight for control of Spear Industries, premieres globally on 25 September.
