Friends and associates of the late Munghana Lonene FM presenter Tiveka Foster "Mafosi-Try by Force" Chauke have raised R49,100 in roughly 24 hours, with contributions still coming in as his community prepares to bid him farewell.
The Xitsonga-speaking community was shaken by Chauke's death in a car accident last week, and the outpouring of financial support reflects how deeply his presence resonated beyond his radio work. Over 30 businessmen, professionals, social figures and community members have contributed to the campaign, with a minimum of R500 per person.
Businessman Howard Mashaba made the largest single donation at R10,000. Mayengani wa Triple Story Baloyi contributed R3,100, Khalanga Production donated R4,000, Prof HL Makhubela and Dr President Patric Mutsenga each gave R3,000, Ntwanano Mhlanga added R2,000, and Dr S Mawila contributed R1,500. The remaining donors gave between R500 and R1,000 each.
Why the fundraiser was started
According to AT News, Mashaba was keen to clarify that the campaign was not born out of financial desperation on the family's part. Speaking about the motivation behind it, he said: "We created this fundraising WhatsApp group not because the family was unable to bury their loved one, but because we saw it as very important to say goodbye to the deceased in the way we could, because he was a very good person."

He added that the funds collected would be handed directly to the family to help cover any remaining funeral costs, though the group was set up without the family's knowledge. "They don't know that there is a group created to help them," Mashaba confirmed.
Mafosi's broadcasting legacy
Before becoming a familiar voice on SABC's Munghana Lonene FM through the programme Timintsu Ta Xitsonga, Chauke built his broadcasting career at Giyani Community Radio and Vision FM, spending several years at both stations before rising to wider prominence.
His sudden passing has left colleagues, listeners and those who worked with him grappling with an unexpected loss. For the people driving this fundraiser, the growing total is less about the rand amount and more about honouring a man whose sense of community defined everything he did.
Mashaba confirmed that the fundraising group will close on Tuesday, after which the collected amount will be transferred to the family. A formal funeral announcement is expected from the family in the coming days.
