Minnie Dlamini has given fans an unexpectedly candid look into how her romance with goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune began, and it turns out Bafana Bafana legend Siphiwe Tshabalala had everything to do with it. The businesswoman opened up during a now-viral appearance on 947 Drive with Thando Thabethe, where she walked listeners through the early days of a relationship many still remember.

How Shabba played matchmaker

Minnie recalled getting a call from Tshabalala, better known as Shabba, who got straight to the point.

"Shabba actually called me, and he said, 'Itu really likes you; can I give him your number?'" she recounted. Unable to hide her reaction, she threw her hands in the air in a silent "Oh my God" moment before admitting she played it cool in her response.

"I said, 'Yeah, totally,'" she laughed, confessing that her casual reply was meant to disguise just how excited she actually was. At the time, Khune happened to be her favourite player, which made the whole situation feel even more surreal.

Their first in-person meeting set the tone for what would follow. Minnie had just returned from a trip home and expected Khune to wait outside the airport, given how recognisable he was. Instead, he walked right in and stood waiting at arrivals.

When they returned to his car, she found it surrounded by roughly ten security guards, a level of attention she was not used to at the time.

A lover girl who gave her all

Minnie confirmed the two were together for just under two years, and said she approached it, as she does with all her relationships, with marriage firmly in mind.

"If you know anything about me, I'm a lover girl. When I get in a relationship, this is it, I'm done, we're getting married. Every relationship I've been in, I've always given my all and thought it was going to end up in marriage."

The two would later find new partners, and along the line, each got married and had kids; however, only Minnie would end up divorced.

During the same interview, Dlamini explained that she is still going through her divorce from her ex-husband, Quinton Jones, despite announcing their separation in 2022.

The interview quickly stirred conversation online, with many social media users pushing back on Minnie for revisiting the relationship publicly. She has previously faced similar criticism for discussing her past with Khune. Rather than engage with the commentary, she posted a cryptic message that summed up her attitude perfectly: "Explaining myself is too much work, please just judge me."
