In Gauteng, the wealthiest person is mining magnate Nicky Oppenheimer, with an estimated net worth of R207 billion. Oppenheimer, who made his fortune through De Beers, is one of the most recognisable names in South African business. In the Western Cape, the title goes to Koos Bekker, worth around R61 billion, best known for transforming Naspers into a global media and technology powerhouse. The Free State’s richest is Johann Rupert, whose luxury goods empire under Richemont has earned him a staggering R270 billion.
Heading north, the Northern Cape’s wealthiest is retail tycoon Christo Wiese, with a net worth of R29 billion, largely built through Pepkor and Shoprite. KwaZulu-Natal is home to Vivian Reddy, worth around R1.9 billion, known for his business ventures in the energy sector and property development. In the Eastern Cape, Sisa Ngebulana leads with R400 million, primarily from property development, including his Billion Group and Rebosis Property Fund.

In Limpopo, Mike Nkuna holds the top spot with R2 billion, built through his work in commercial property, including founding Masingita Property Investment Holdings. Mpumalanga’s richest is Robert Gumede, worth R3 billion, a businessman and philanthropist whose Gijima Group is a major player in the IT industry. Finally, in the North West province, Vincent Mntambo is the wealthiest, with R1 billion from investments spanning mining, energy, and media.
