Turning a hobby into a side hustle
The Briefly News team spoke with Leonardo Plaatjies, the man behind the creative ironing board and chair innovation, to get an idea of how he started the business.
We asked the man if he considers himself an entrepreneur and what the motivation was behind the woodworking project. He shared:
"I don't see myself as an entrepreneur, but more as a hobbyist. I like challenging myself in doing wood crafts with the little tools I have available."
The team asked where the inspiration for the chair/iron board combination came from. The man responded:
"The chair/iron board also isn't a unique idea. I have seen it online and thought it was a neat idea, and set out to make it."
Learnado's smart idea was a hit on the internet, with people asking him to put it on Takealot. We asked if the creation was his main source of income or a side hustle. He said:
"Since the big interest and orders I received, I decided to build a couple to build up stock, but I have a 9-5 job, so time is minimal. So, I don't think I will get to the stage of placing the product on Takealot."
Briefly News asked how much time goes into making one ironing board, and he responded:
"The thing is, I use repurposed pallet wood, and preparation of the raw wood takes up most of the time, so I'd say about three hours."
When asked if he had any other woodwork ideas in mind now that he has received such a great response. Learnado said:
"I have some other projects in mind and will be posting updates as I go along."
