High schooler asks SA to help with matric ball preparations

The matric ball is one of the biggest events in high school. The learners get to dress up in their finest attire and mingle with their teachers at a lovely reception.

The gathering is usually very lively with good music and food. It’s to celebrate the youngsters’ academic journey and a chance for them to have their big hoorah before writing their nerve-wracking final exams.

South Africans responded quickly to a young man’s request for help after his grandmother broke the news that she could not afford to take him to the ball. The young man went online to share his story.

He received both love and hate from strangers on TikTok. The negative got to him and broke his heart:

“Why are you insulting me? You know very well that you guys are older than me, so I won't be able to insult you back. Even though you were younger than me, I would've never insulted you. But you guys keep on being negative towards me by commenting rudely on my previous video. Your time will come. It's okay.”
