Excitement was an understatement for a young Cape Town woman, Kayla Tamsian, who shared that she found a version of the fruit-shaped desserts in the city that had been taking the internet, specifically TikTok, by storm.

On 14 September, 2025, Kayla shared on her TikTok account that she had visited the local business Sena's Kitchen, which provided the sweet treats. The fruity flavours (apple, lemon, pear, blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, and mango) replicated the fruit, while the pistachio- and cacao bean-flavoured desserts took on other shapes.

Kayla seemed to enjoy most of the treats, paying R70 for the berry flavours and R75 for the others.

She told a TikTok user:

"I splurged a bit by getting them all. I just wanted to try everything."

The fruit-shaped desserts were popularised by French pastry chef Cédric Grolet, who is known for his trompe-l'œil (trick the eye) confectionery. Since Cédric's hyperrealistic pastries have topped the trending charts, many pastry companies around the world have entered the chat, with social media users giving their opinions about their unique taste.

The pastry chef behind the fruit-shaped desserts

Briefly News reached out to Sena du Plessis, a pastry chef of 10 years, who launched Sena's Kitchen two years ago. She shared that she had been dreaming of creating the viral desserts for quite some time.

When asked what made her hop onto the trend, Sena stated:

"My goal has always been to offer something unique, treats that people can't just find in every shop."

While R70 and R75 may be a steep price for a dessert, Sena noted that when it came to pricing, she initially calculated the cost of the ingredients, not including the hours used to create the confectionery.

"I wanted to keep the price as low as possible, but while shopping for ingredients, I was shocked at how much the Callebaut chocolate prices increased."

Fruit-shaped desserts intrigue South Africans

Several social media users, particularly Capetonians, headed over to Kayla's comment section, showing an interest in the viral desserts that had been dominating TikTok's For You Pages. Kalya's huge reaction to the desserts also amused social media users, with one person calling it valid.

An excited @thoko8782 told the online community:

"What a good day to live in Cape Town."

The young woman's outburst had @nkosazanaheshu saying with a laugh:

"The screams are taking me out."

After seeing Kayla do a taste test of all the flavours, @brentoftheworld commented:

"I just moved to Cape Town. This is the Lord's work."

@eemaan_a, who seemingly tried the dessert, stated:

"I would say the mousse could have been flavoured with the fruit a bit, or more filling had to be added. At some point, it started tasting the same for me because of the little centre being the only flavour difference."

@lunekaplan claimed to know the person behind the sweet treats and said:

"Sena is a friend of ours, and she’s absolutely amazing, definitely worth it to check her out!"
