The informative video, which quickly gained traction on social media, ranked the top retailers by revenue and highlighted their year-on-year growth.

According to the man, who goes by the Facebook handle Jandre de Beer, Woolworths was in fifth place, earning R81 billion per year, placing it among SA’s leading premium food and clothing retailers. He noted that the brand continues to grow steadily at 11% annually, driven by its strong positioning in the premium market and loyal customer base.

In an unexpected twist, he placed Checkers in fourth place, declaring that the chain brings in R100 billion annually and is growing at an impressive 14% per year. Jandre de Beer praised Checkers for being "the fastest-growing premium store in the country," crediting much of its success to the Sixty60 delivery app, which recently reached 100 million orders and continues to disrupt the grocery delivery space.

Coming in third on his list was Pick n Pay, which generates R115 billion in yearly sales and a 7% growth rate. He explained that the retailer is currently restructuring to stay competitive, closing loss-making stores while expanding more affordable "box store" formats. According to Jandre de Beer, early signs suggest this turnaround strategy may slowly be paying off.

In second place overall is Shoprite, with an impressive R117 billion in annual sales, though its yearly growth sits at a more modest 6%. Despite this, the brand remains one of the strongest players in the market.

Topping the list is Spar, which the social media user Jandre de Beer described as "crushing it" with R152 billion in yearly sales and a 4% growth rate. While its growth percentage is lower, its massive revenue puts it at the top of SA’s retail rankings.

The video that was posted on 31 October 2025 has since sparked discussions about consumer trends, competition among retailers, and the rapid evolution of SA’s grocery sector.
