A South African woman and activist known on TikTok as Thulas pushed back hard against Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia on 10 August 2026, calling out what she described as a glaring contradiction in his public statements.
Cachalia made the remarks in Reiger Park following a devastating Friday night attack that claimed the lives of two women and two police officers. Speaking to residents, he urged those living in gang-affected areas to stand up and reclaim their communities.
Thulas calls out the contradiction
For Thulas, the statement was impossible to take seriously. In her TikTok video, she pointed out that not long ago, the minister had told South Africans to stand down when they attempted to drive illegal foreigners out of their neighbourhoods.

“Not so long ago, he told us to step back when we tried to reclaim our country,” she said.
“He said we are not authorised to assist the police. Now he must work. He must leave us alone.”
Thulas went further, arguing that crime in affected areas briefly declined during those community-led actions, and that Cachalia’s intervention effectively reversed that progress. She also pointed to a reported R600 million the minister had at his disposal, saying it proved he already had the resources to tackle crime without calling on ordinary residents to do the job for him.
