Ndlunkulu Mawewe, the fourth wife of AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, captured hearts across South Africa after a video of her speaking fluent Sepedi at a formal gathering went viral on 15 September 2026.
The clip, shared by royal couturier @xviii_victorian on TikTok, shows the queen at what appears to be an upscale indoor celebration. The room is warmly lit, with wood panelling, a rug, paintings on the walls, and guests dressed in elegant Western formal attire — men in suits and women in long gowns.
At the centre of the scene, an older woman approached Ndlunkulu Mawewe and asked her in Sepedi,
"So do you also speak Sepedi?"

The queen replied that she did. The older woman, clearly delighted, then turned to gesture towards the gentleman behind her and asked whether the queen also taught the king the language. Ndlunkulu Mawewe replied warmly that she does, "a little bit". The older woman lit up and repeated the phrase back, charmed by what she had just heard.
A queen with remarkable range
Born Princess Sihle Mdluli, Ndlunkulu Mawewe is a Swati princess whose mother, Inkosi Khulile Mkhatshwa, serves as the female chief of the Mawewe Traditional Authority in Komatipoort, Mpumalanga. Her lobola negotiations were concluded in July 2026, with King Misuzulu paying between 70 and 80 cattle to seal the union.
Beyond her royal lineage, she holds a BSc in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering as well as an MBA, both from the University of the Witwatersrand. She has worked as a Senior Strategy and Business Development Executive in South Africa's mining and corporate sector. Her multilingualism spans siSwati, isiZulu, and English, with Sepedi now clearly adding to that list.
