The catch? The banking app screenshot visible in the clip showed an expected account balance of just R3, with pending transactions still outstanding.

The sarcastic, humorous tone of the post was not lost on viewers, many of whom immediately recognised the all-too-familiar reality of waiting on financial aid that never quite arrives in full, or on time.

NSFAS stipend struggles hit close to home

The clip tapped into a frustration shared by thousands of South African students who rely on the National Student Financial Aid Scheme for their monthly living allowances. Delays and low disbursements have long been a sore point, and the video gave that shared experience a comedic but pointed outlet.

Briefly News spoke with two students who attend NWU about their early allowances. Amahle Tshazi said, "We got our allowances earlier than expected. The usual date is the 24th of every month.

Lethabo added, "There were two months where our allowances reflected as early as the 17th."
