A Durban family marked a painful anniversary on 26 September 2026. TikTok user @gijanefit posted an emotional tribute to a man named Mfundo, exactly one year after he was killed during an attempted hijacking.
The video brought together cherished moments between Mfundo and Pey. The two could be seen dancing, sharing meals, playing outdoors and exchanging warm hugs, all set to a soulful acoustic track. It was the kind of bond that needed no words.
In her caption, the creator was candid about where things stood: "One year ago, Mfundo was murdered, and we are not any closer to getting justice for his family. While others walk free and go on about their lives, his family are still mourning his loss."

The Briefly News team spoke with gijanefit, who opened up about her fondest moments with the late courier driver and shared how her family is healing following his passing.
We asked the mom what stands out as her favourite memory of Mfundo's visits to your home. She shared:
"When he came for lunch with his co-worker after Christmas, and my little girl was trying to teach him yoga."
The team asked how the family, especially Pey, has been coping since his passing. She responded:
"She now understands that people don’t come back after death, so she is doing okay this year, but she will often say "Mfundo 😢" randomly when she thinks of him or sees his cap in her room. I’m in contact with his family, and we often talk about him and check in with each other. It still feels surreal that he’s gone and that I won’t get a random message or video call from him. With the help of everyone on social media, we managed to fundraise and pay for his entire funeral as well as buy clothes for his children for the year. Keeping his memory alive and meeting his family in August was deeply special and healing for all of us."
When asked what lesson or message she hopes people take from your story with Mfundo. The content creator said:
"Be kind to everyone. You are not better than the person serving you your coffee, and by simply being kind to Mfundo, we built a beautiful friendship that impacted us all. I want to build on this sense of community, so I’ve been working on an initiative for a year now that will hopefully allow us to do good for others in his honour going forward."
