  • A Nigerian woman who spent nearly 15 years studying in South Africa returned home and shared the culture shocks she experienced
  • One difference that left her stunned was how Nigerians buy food compared to what she was used to in South Africa
  • Her TikTok video struck a nerve with South Africans who picked up on something else entirely

The lady posted a selfie-style outdoor vlog on 10 October sharing one of the biggest culture shocks she had experienced since coming back to Nigeria. The caption on the video read:

"Cultural shock as a Nigerian student in South Africa who just came back to Nigeria after a decade."

The thing that caught her off guard was something as simple as buying food. Back in South Africa, she said, you walk up to a food stall or restaurant, and they hand you a disposable takeaway container. No fuss, no extras. TikTokker @adebankevic explained things that work differently. You either arrive with your own lunchbox, or you pay separately for the plate along with your food. She reflected that the difference was a reminder of how much countries vary in their everyday customs, not just in big, obvious ways but in the small routines that make up daily life. Mzansi notices something else

South African viewers in the comments were less focused on the food and more amused by something she had clearly picked up during her years in the country.
