Search ends in Vereeniging grasslands

In a media statement issued on 15 October 2026 on behalf of Colonel Thithi, police confirmed that arrangements had been finalised with wildlife professionals to safely relocate the animal to a secure environment. The lion's owner has not been identified, and an investigation into where it came from remains open.

Police used the statement to address misinformation that had spread on social media during the search. The statement read:

"The police are concerned about the circulation of false and unverified information on social media that has caused unnecessary panic."

Residents of Sedibeng and surrounding areas were urged to remain calm and allow authorities and wildlife experts to conclude the operation safely.
