Singer Alicia Keys Donates R1 Million to Help Save Arts Programme at Her Alma Mater

Celebrated singer Alicia Keys and her music label have contributed R1 million to fundraising to retain the Professional Performing Arts School (PPAS) in New York City.

It comes after 12-year-old girl Tennyson Artigliere, a seventh grader, created a GoFundMe platform to raise R1.9 million to prevent the performing arts programme in the school from permanently closing due to budget cuts.

When the singer learnt about the girl's quest to save the Professional Performing Arts School, the US musician Keys, who also attended the school, decided to contribute R1 million.

Per TMZ, Keys and Roc Nation's donation increased the kid's fundraising total by around R900K. The singer also promised to assist in annual fundraising for the programme until the city can provide the funding independently.

Commenting on the donation from the singer, Tennyson expressed joy for celebrity assistance.

“I had no idea that it would be this big and blow up this huge,” the 12-year-old said.

The donation to PPAS to help the school remain operational until the school year’s end has relieved parents, students and alumni alike.

Popular Cape Town restaurant Emazulwini closes doors

In other news, Briefly News reported that the popular restaurant in Cape Town, Emazulwini, will close its doors. After four years of operation, the famous V&A Waterfront restaurant, Emazulwini, closed its doors on 25 February.

The restaurant's Facebook announcement broke some netizens. The restaurant's emotional post thanked its patrons and those who allowed it to serve food to them. However, the establishment did not share its reasons for closing shop and left netizens wondering. Some online users speculated and blamed the economic conditions and load-shedding on the restaurant's decision to close.
