President Joe Biden to Sign Bill to Ban TikTok in USA

US President, Joe Biden, has said he would sign legislation seeking to ban the popular social media app, TikTok, in the country.

A unanimous legislation passed through the US House Energy and Commerce Committee on Thursday, March 7, calling on China's ByteDance to drop its ownership of TikTok or effectively face a US ban.

The House plans to vote this week on bipartisan legislation that would allow Biden to ban TikTok.

According to AP News, Biden confirmed the app would be banned if the bill passes

"If they pass it, I’ll sign it."

In a similar vein, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters:

''This bill is important, we welcome this step.''

The bill would give ByteDance 165 days, or five and a half months, to divest TikTok to a US entity. If it fails to do so, content-sharing application will be banned from US app stores and web hosting services. This would cut off access to its 170 million American users.

Survey suggests MK Party Could beat Economic Freedom Fighters

In other political news, Briefly News reported that the Mkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) is generating buzz. A recent survey predicted the party could capture over 10% of the national vote in upcoming elections, potentially surpassing the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

Conducted in February by the Brenthurst Foundation, the survey found a rise in support for both the DA (24%, up from 23% in October) and the MK party.
