GAUTENG — The South African Police Service (SAPS) is probing whether the murders of two Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) constables in Reiger Park formed part of a gang initiation ritual intended to elevate the status of the suspected shooter within his criminal organisation.
The accused, 23-year-old Regan Collins, made his first appearance before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on 12 August 2026, charged with the murders of four people on 7 August 2026.
Collins stands accused of killing the two AGU members, Constable Thapelo Tlomatsana (29) and Constable Sphiwe Sibeko (28), as well as two civilian women, identified as Jaydin Magerman and Rolene Lessing.

Officers believed to have been lured into a trap
A police officer familiar with the investigation said Collins' criminal profiling identified him as a suspected member of the Vatos Locos gang, and that investigators were examining whether the killings were motivated by a desire to climb the gang's hierarchy.
According to new information, Constables Tlomatsana and Sibeko were travelling towards the scene of a shooting when someone flagged them down using a torch. As the officers received directions, an armed man reportedly ran towards their vehicle and opened fire, striking both constables multiple times in their upper bodies.
The investigating officer suggested the individual who flagged down the constables may have been deliberately used to distract the officers before Collins killed them.
"To his gang, killing a law enforcement officer or a police officer elevates one higher in their rank structures. These killings, we believe, were for a ritual," the source said.
Police stressed that the motive has not been confirmed and that the investigation into a possible gang connection is ongoing.
