2 Armed Robbery Suspects Die in Vehicle Crash After Violent Robbery

LIMPOPO — Two men suspected of involvement in a violent filling station robbery died on Tuesday after the vehicle they were travelling in overturned in the Marble Hall policing area.

The sequence of events began at roughly 2:30am when 13 armed men allegedly raided a filling station at Moteti Complex in Dennilton, in the Sekhukhune District. Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the group was armed with handguns and rifles when they confronted security guards and a cashier before making their way to the cash office.

According to Ledwaba, the suspects allegedly detonated an explosive device to force open a drop safe and remove an undisclosed amount of cash. The group then fled the scene on foot, firing several shots as they left. Members of the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit were deployed to process the scene, where officers recovered a number of pistol and rifle cartridges.

Approximately two and a half hours later, at about 5:10am, police received a tip-off about a white bakkie carrying Mpumalanga registration plates that had overturned along the R573 between Slaagboom and Siyabuswa. Officers who arrived at the scene found two male occupants: the driver was declared dead on the spot, while the passenger, who had sustained serious head injuries, was transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance and later succumbed to his injuries.

Firearms linked to robbery

A significant cache of weapons and ammunition was recovered from the crashed vehicle. The items included an R5 rifle, two R5 magazines, 56 rounds of R5 ammunition, two 9mm pistols, an empty 9mm magazine, and a single 9mm round.

The firearms and ammunition recovered from the crashed vehicle have been positively linked to the two deceased suspects and the robbery.

The identities of both men were subsequently established. Cases of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as culpable homicide, have been opened at Marble Hall police station.

Hijacking suspects killed in a crash in Sunnyside

Previously, Briefly News reported that the South African Police Service is investigating a case of culpable homicide after two suspects were killed in a crash in Sunnyside, Pretoria. The suspects, who were arrested for motor vehicle theft, were killed while being transported at the back of a police van. They were found in possession of car jammers and different sets of registration plates during the arrest.
