A Cape Town commuter train became the talk of South Africa after a shocking video captured what appeared to be a major electrical explosion on the roof of a Metrorail carriage at Muizenberg Station.
Instagram user @memez_.co posted the footage on 12 September 2026, captioning it: “explosion on train in Muizenberg.” The clip spread quickly, pulling in reactions from people split between genuine alarm and dark humour.
In the video, the train’s pantograph, the mechanism that connects the carriage to overhead power lines, sent repeated electrical arcs and explosions across the roof. Thick smoke billowed upward as bystanders on the platform scrambled away from the train.
