SOUTH AFRICA — Cabinet has extended the tenure of Eskom board chairperson Mteto Nyati by three years, keeping him in the role until 2029.

According to eNCA, Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa announced on 25 September 2026 that Cabinet had approved the extension before Nyati's current term was due to expire at the end of October. Nyati, who was recently slammed for raising concerns about transmission unbundling, accepted the continuation of his appointment. He said the level of public interest in whether his term would be renewed reflects how deeply South Africans care about the state of critical national infrastructure.

He acknowledged that the position carries substantial responsibility and said his focus remains aligned with efforts to address the country's ongoing power challenges.

Cabinet backs leadership continuity at Eskom

With Nyati remaining at the helm, the existing board leadership will oversee long-term turnaround strategies and operational planning over the next three years.

Eskom has been central to South Africa's energy crisis in recent years, with load shedding placing severe pressure on households and businesses alike. Maintaining stable board leadership has been cited as a key factor in sustaining the reform momentum the utility has pursued.

Eskom doubles annual profit
