KwaNdelu Massacre: 2 Local Businesspeople Reportedly Questioned As Police Probe Deadly Shooting

CAPE TOWN — Detectives are questioning several individuals, among them two local businesspeople, as part of the investigation into a mass shooting at KwaNdelu Shisanyama in Lwandle that left 10 people dead in the early hours of Sunday, 27 September 2026.
The shooting took place at approximately 1:46am during a Heritage Day celebration. Five patrons died at the scene, while a further five succumbed to their wounds at medical facilities. Eleven others were injured in the attack.
CCTV footage under review
Journalist Velani Ludidi, citing sources within the South African Police Service (SAPS), reported that investigators have obtained CCTV footage from the premises. The footage allegedly shows one of the suspected gunmen arriving at the venue ahead of the attack and blending in among the other patrons.

According to those sources, the man then allegedly drew a firearm once his alleged accomplices entered the establishment. Police have not independently confirmed this account, and the motive for the attack has not been established.
No extortion link confirmed
Sources familiar with the investigation told Ludidi that no connection between the shooting and extortion has been identified. The owner of KwaNdelu, which opened just over a month before the incident, is not reported to have received any extortion demands prior to the attack.
While extortion-related violence has affected businesses in various parts of South Africa, investigators have not indicated that this played any role in what happened at KwaNdelu.
No arrests have been announced. Police continue to search for those responsible.
Shisanyama issues statement
Briefly News reported that KwaNdelu Shisanyama has offered its condolences to the families of those who died and apologised to all those affected. The business confirmed that it ordinarily closes at 10pm and does not sell alcohol, but had extended its operating hours specifically for the Heritage Day event when the shooting occurred.
The establishment said it would cooperate fully with police and called on authorities to pursue the facts rather than allow unverified speculation to circulate.
