KWAZULU NATAL — A six-year-old girl was fighting for her life on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, after a teenage boy armed with a knife forced his way into a classroom at a church-based special needs primary school in Umhlali, on KwaZulu-Natal's North Coast.

He pushed his way onto school grounds and into a classroom, where he locked a teacher and several children inside before violently assaulting the young girl. A second teacher managed to force the door open, at which point the suspect fled the classroom.

He was pursued by bystanders and an Alpha Security guard, who restrained him before handing him over to police.

A suspect with a troubled history

The accused is believed to be the same teenager who was previously caught attempting to detonate a device at a mall in Ballito.

Following that incident, Umhlali police allegedly returned the failed device to the boy's mother and declined to open a criminal case. A formal case was only registered after the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation stepped in, following an alert from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Rather than being arrested, the teenager was admitted to Town Hill Hospital, a psychiatric facility in Pietermaritzburg, but was reportedly seen at the mall again a few days later.

How did South Africans react?

Members of the public reacted with alarm to news of Tuesday's stabbing.

Manisha Doorgaparsad asked:

"Why was he not in jail or something for attempting to detonate a device in the first place?"

Daryl Pather wrote:

"This time, charge him as an adult."

Preshen Rampersadh added:

"After the first incident, this boy was supposed to have been admitted into a medical institution."

@phililekam said:

"The police were so lax about the first incident. I hope they'll keep him in for good this time. Oh, poor baby girl."

@PaleFlowermco added:

"It's that same boy who wanted to bomb the mall, and the parents were in denial."
