Murder-accused former club cricketer Tristan Perez returned to the Wynberg Magistrates' Court on Friday, 7 August 2026, in a case that has gripped South Africa since the death of his girlfriend, Elana Brooke, in Heathfield, Cape Town, on 23 March.

At Friday's hearing, the State requested that the matter be transferred to the Wynberg Regional Court. Perez's next court appearance has been scheduled for 27 August 2026.
Investigation declared complete
David, Brooke's ex-husband and the family's spokesperson, confirmed that the investigation into her death has now concluded. He said all outstanding reports requested by the Regional Prosecutor had been received from the South African Police Service.

"The investigation has been completed, and the matter is progressing through the legal process in the Regional Court," David said in a statement.
"This is a positive step forward, and we remain hopeful as we continue to fight for justice for Elana."
Perez had last appeared briefly in the Wynberg Magistrates' Court on 2 June 2026, when the case was postponed to allow the State additional time to finalise its investigation.

Background to the case
Police arrested Perez in March after suspecting him of killing Brooke following what was believed to be a heated argument. Investigators were granted permission to examine his phone, on which they reportedly found a recording of an escalating altercation. Perez told officers that Brooke had taken her own life. She was 46 years old.
Perez was subsequently released on R5 000 bail, a decision that drew outrage from Brooke's family and representatives, who publicly condemned the amount as grossly inadequate.
