A fresh injury concern has hit the Proteas just days before their three-Test series against Australia, with another hamstring problem emerging during the final ODI in Potchefstroom on Wednesday, September 30. The setback comes at an uncomfortable time for South Africa, with the first Test scheduled for October 9 in Durban.

Proteas hamstring concerns continue before Australia Tests

The latest setback involved Tony de Zorzi, who pulled up during Australia’s innings and couldn't continue for the rest of the match. His availability for the upcoming Test series is now a concern.

The development follows a string of hamstring problems affecting the Proteas. Kagiso Rabada and Ottneil Baartman were previously sidelined, while Lungi Ngidi was also ruled out of the ODI series with a right hamstring injury.

Australia post 322 as Proteas face tough chase

The injury concern came during an eventful final ODI. Australia recovered from early setbacks to make 322/9, with Alex Carey top-scoring with 74 and Mitchell Marsh contributing 56. Corbin Bosch was South Africa’s leading wicket-taker, finishing with 4/60.

The Proteas had already secured the three-match ODI series after winning the opening two matches in Durban and Johannesburg. Australia, however, claimed the final match by 45 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method after rain ended South Africa’s chase at 145/4.

Australia Tests now move into focus

The ODI series has now ended, but the bigger assignment begins next week. The first Test starts at Kingsmead in Durban on October 9, followed by matches in Gqeberha and Cape Town.

For South Africa, attention will now turn to the medical updates surrounding the squad, with fitness potentially playing an important role in final selection.
