Pirates Chairman Dr Irvin Khoza Addresses Claims He Owns the Premier Soccer League

Orlando Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza has come out to address the rumours and speculations making rounds that he owns the Premier Soccer League.

The Sea Robbers boss doubles as the chairman of the PSL and also the vice-president of the South African Football Association.

The 77-year-old has been at the helm of affairs of the South African league since 2003, with some fans labelling him as a dictator due to the number of years he's been leading the organisation.

He recently talked about the club status sales in the PSL with the recent one being SuperSport United having new owners and change of name.

“How do they arrive at that? Khoza questioned.

“What’s the basis for these claims? Just because some supporters are frustrated with their team’s performance, they point fingers at me. But how could I be solely responsible when there’s an executive committee of ten members?

"There’s also a board of governors made up of representatives from all 32 clubs. We hold regular meetings, and never once has there been a motion of no confidence against me. So where is this coming from? It sounds like someone is unhappy and trying to spread falsehoods or tarnish my reputation.”

The Orlando Pirates chairman emphasised that many don’t realise the struggles he and veteran league executive Dr. Kaizer Motaung Sr have faced to keep the sport alive.

“People aspire to be like me or Kaizer Motaung, but they don’t see the sacrifices and challenges we’ve endured,” Khoza added.

“If you really looked beneath the surface, you’d witness the internal battles we’ve fought over the years. Running football is more than a job, it’s a calling. We’ve invested so much into building this brand. With 32 clubs and a governing board, it’s never about just one person.
