The South African international was part of the squad that defeated the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations champions 3-1 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, November 15, 2025.

Mokoena played for 46 minutes before being substituted early in the second half for Orlando Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha.

The 28-year-old made headlines during South Africa's qualification stage for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being fielded in a game he was not eligible to play. Bafana Bafana had three points deducted from their tally, but it didn't stop them from securing the qualification title in their final qualifiers against Rwanda.
