The likes of defending champions the Ivory Coast, three-time winners Nigeria, their group-stage counterparts Egypt, who are seven-time champions, Senegal, and the host nation, Morocco, are some of the nations tipped as contenders to lift the title in January 2026.

Why Bafana are favourites to win AFCON

Sports journalist Moses Mbogo, while chatting with Briefly News, explained why South Africa is classified alongside other top football countries as favourites to win the AFCON in Morocco.

"South Africa have improved a lot since Hugo Broos took over as coach. They finished third last year, and they could have done better if not for the unfortunate loss to Nigeria on penalties," he said.
"They have an experienced coach who has won the competition and also a quality squad that has developed together for some time now.
"I think they are top ten in rankings in Africa, and they are good enough to go all out to win the competition this term."

Mbogo also shared his thoughts on the crop of players in the Bafana Bafana squad coming from the Premier Soccer League. He explained how this is an added advantage for Mzansi.

"I think South Africa is the top nation coming into the competition with the highest representation from their local league. That's another added advantage for Hugo Broos' side," he added.
"They have most players from Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, judging from their recent matches in the World Cup qualifiers. It means you will have close to three or four teammates in the starting line-up.
"They also understand African football, compared to the aesthetics some of the European-based players of other countries would bring."

South Africa's first game in the competition would be against Angola on Monday, December 22, 2025, at the Marrakesh Stadium in Marrakesh.

Mbule shares what Broos told Bafana

Briefly News earlier reported that Sipho Mbule shared what Broos told Bafana Bafana ahead of their friendly game against Zambia.

The Orlando Pirates midfielder was one of the best players in the game against the 2012 AFCON winners.
