South African international Mbekezeli Mbokazi has been dealt a crushing injury blow after his impressive performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Chicago Fire have confirmed the young defender will not play again this season after suffering a thigh injury.
The 20-year-old returned to club duty following Bafana Bafana's historic run to the World Cup knockout stages. However, his comeback has been cut short, leaving both the MLS club and South African supporters without one of their standout performers.
Gregg Berhalter confirms Mbokazi setback
MLS Soccer reports that while speaking before Chicago Fire's Leagues Cup fixture against Necaxa, head coach Gregg Berhalter acknowledged the impact of losing the defender for the remainder of the campaign.

"Mbo being out for the year is a tough one," Berhalter said.
"It's really about the next person stepping up and being a team that's hard to score on. Closing the spaces, being compact.
"We're working on that now, and I think today you're going to see that."
Defender's breakthrough season cut short
Mbokazi has enjoyed an outstanding first year in Major League Soccer since completing his move from Orlando Pirates in December 2025. He became a regular in Chicago Fire's defence, starting all 12 of his league appearances before the injury.
His displays also earned him enough fan support to top voting for the 2026 MLS All-Star Game, although the injury ruled him out of taking part.
Chicago Fire look ahead without Mbokazi
The club confirmed Mbokazi will not be placed on the season-ending injury list, meaning Chicago Fire will not recover the U22 Initiative roster place assigned to him.
With the Secondary Transfer Window closing on 2 September 2026, Chicago Fire still have an opportunity to reinforce their squad as they continue their push for the MLS Cup Playoffs.
