Mamelodi Sundowns Beat Orlando Pirates to Another Promising Defender

Orlando Pirates were not the only Soweto giants keeping an eye on one of AmaZulu’s promising young defenders. As the transfer window edged towards its deadline, the race for the 22-year-old took an unexpected turn, with Mamelodi Sundowns ultimately moving ahead of their rivals.

Sundowns have now secured Wandile Dube on a three-year deal, adding another defensive option to Miguel Cardoso’s squad. The move comes after the defender attracted interest from Pirates, who were also exploring a move for him.

Wandile Dube completes Sundowns move

FARPost reported on Tuesday, 22 September, that Dube passed his medical on Monday before joining his new teammates for his first training session on Tuesday. Sundowns are expected to formally announce the defender's arrival.

The move ends a period of uncertainty around the young defender. AmaZulu had exercised an option to extend his contract until June 2027, while also attempting to negotiate a longer-term agreement.

However, those talks stalled, giving Sundowns an opportunity to step in before the transfer window closed.

Orlando Pirates were also interested in Dube

Orlando Pirates had identified Dube as a potential addition to their defence and had made enquiries about his availability.

However, reports indicate that the Buccaneers could not reach an agreement with AmaZulu, allowing Sundowns to move ahead.

Dube made 10 appearances across all competitions for AmaZulu during the 2025/26 campaign. He can operate as a left-sided centre-back or at left-back, giving Sundowns another versatile defensive option.

AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane previously praised the youngster's potential.

“Dube has so much potential. He is a rare breed and can become a special player,” Zwane said.

Sundowns continue defensive rebuild

Dube becomes another defensive addition for Miguel Cardoso, following the arrivals of Deano van Rooyen and Thabang Matuludi.

The move also fits Sundowns' longer-term approach, with FARPost reporting that the club views Dube as a signing for the future rather than simply a short-term solution.

Sundowns are competing across several fronts this season, including the Betway Premiership and continental football, making squad depth increasingly important.
