Pitso Mosimane has broken his silence after Guinea coach Paulo Duarte made a big claim about Bafana Bafana following South Africa’s 2-1 victory in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday, 26 September.
Duarte was impressed by what he saw from South Africa at the Orlando Amstel Arena. He even placed Bafana alongside Morocco and Senegal among the continent's leading teams.
“For me, the three best teams are Morocco, Senegal and South Africa in Africa, in my opinion, obviously,” Duarte said after the match.
The Portuguese coach also pointed to Bafana’s depth and the understanding between several players who regularly play together at club level.

“They are strong in every sector,” Duarte said. “They have big, strong, dynamic players, a very good goalkeeper, and depth across the board.”
Mosimane keeps Bafana praise in perspective
Mosimane welcomed the assessment but did not appear keen to dwell on it.
“If that's his assessment, it's humbling,” Mosimane said, according to KickOff.
“But top three, top three, yes, we have got a bronze, with that, yes, right. But we have a long way to go, right? They are a good team also. We played well. We are a good team.”
Mosimane’s “bronze” reference was a nod to Bafana Bafana’s third-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. South Africa secured a podium finish at that tournament.
His return to competitive action also started with a win. Bafana edged Guinea 2-1 in their opening AFCON 2027 qualifier.
Ime Okon gave South Africa the lead. Guinea responded after the break through Seydouba Cisse, bringing the match level.
The decisive moment came in the 77th minute. Substitute Samukele Kabini restored Bafana’s advantage and secured all 3 points for Mosimane’s side.
Bafana Bafana turn attention to Eritrea
The result put South Africa on 3 points at the top of Group D after the opening round. Eritrea and Kenya drew 1-1 in the other fixture, while Guinea remained without a point.
Bafana now face Eritrea in Cairo on Wednesday, 30 September. The match is being played at a neutral venue, with South Africa then scheduled to meet Egypt in a friendly on 4 October.
Duarte’s assessment has placed additional attention on Bafana Bafana, but Mosimane has made it clear that South Africa still have work ahead. The next test against Eritrea gives his side an immediate opportunity to build on the winning start.
