Later, he moved to Alexandra to work in maintaining swimming pools and tennis courts in Sandton in 1971 where he met his uncle, a fan of mbaqanga music. He taught him to play the Tsonga guitar, and the rest is history.

Career

He returned home in 1978 and worked repairing radio sets, but it was not enough to provide for his wife and child. His love for music pushed him to buy a radio with a cassette recorder. He played the recorded music along to his guitar, and this gave him the idea to start a band.

He recruited 13 singers – forming the Shinyori Sisters - but the first few months were rough, and this number went down to 5. They performed small venues such as schools to raise money to travel to Johannesburg to pursue music.

They signed a contract for their first album with Gallo Record Company (GRC). They later got a better deal with Wea Records, at which point the brand of music changed from Nyoresh to Shimatsatsa, meaning “beautiful girl.” The first album in this series came in 1981.

What happened to Dr Thomas Chauke?

In December 2019, he was forced to leave the stage at the Mapungubwe Arts Festival in Polokwane, Limpopo. It was alleged that the Limpopo Arts and Culture Member of the Executive Council (MEC) Thandi Moraka had cut his performance short because she did not understand the language in Tsonga music.

There were immediate accusations of tribalism on the MEC’s part and calls for a boycott. A later clarification from their camp said it was a scheduling error and an apology was issued to the veteran musician.

That concludes our biography of Thomas Chauke. If you find it informative, consider sharing it as widely as possible, and feel free to leave your thoughts in the comment section below.
