In an interview, she recalled growing up being a naughty child. Bunu also struggled to discipline naughty students during her teaching years.

I couldn't deal with the naughty kids, especially because students have changed. It was not like us in the olden days where the teachers would show you a sign that meant they would beat you, and you would get scared, remarked Khanyisa.

After quitting teaching, Khanyisa took a leap of faith and relocated to Johannesburg in 2008 to follow her talent. She auditioned for the SABC1's stand-up comedy reality competition dubbed So You Think You're Funny.
