Former Miss South Africa Tatum Keshwar-Wheatley is facing serious financial and professional consequences after the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) handed her a R3 million fine and a 20-year ban from the financial services industry. The regulatory body found she played a central role in artificially inflating a listed company's share price.
The FSCA determined that Keshwar-Wheatley, who wore the Miss SA crown in 2008, coordinated with her husband Warren Gregory Wheatley, the former CEO of Altvest, and former Chief Investment Officer Akshay Suresh Karan to manipulate Altvest's share price in September 2022. According to the authority, the group executed trades designed to create a false impression of strong market demand on the Cape Town Stock Exchange, in violation of the Financial Markets Act.
Keshwar-Wheatley carried out the trades through her firm, Tatum Keshwar Investments, which was penalised alongside her personally. Her husband Warren and his entity WGW Capital received a combined R5 million fine, while Karan faced a separate R2 million penalty. All three individuals were issued identical 20-year debarment orders, prohibiting them from serving as key officers or providing any services to financial institutions.
The Citizen reports that the trio has signalled their intention to appeal the penalties to the Financial Services Tribunal, and the FSCA's action remains subject to that process.

Africa Bitcoin Corporation acts swiftly
The fallout extended beyond regulatory circles. Africa Bitcoin Corporation moved quickly in response to the ruling, placing Wheatley and Karan on precautionary leave while terminating Keshwar-Wheatley's consulting arrangement with the company effective 31 August 2026.
Stafford Masie stepped into the role of interim CEO as the board conducts its review of the matter. The company was careful to note that the suspensions are non-disciplinary in nature, pending the outcome of the appeal.
