Bathong, Tebogo Thobejane's attempted murder case doesn't seem to be coming to an end anytime soon, as more information keeps coming up whenever her ex-lover, Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala and the other co-accused take a stand in court.

On Tuesday, 2 September 2025, Matlala appeared at the Alexandra Magistrates Court in Johannesburg for his formal bail application alone, as his co-accused will only appear in October 2025.

During his appearance in court for the attempted murder of the former Muvhango actress, the 49-year-old denied being the mastermind behind Thobejane's hit and also stated that they only dated for 13 months in 2020. Cat was arrested in May 2025.

"I plan to say I am not guilty to all these charges if this case goes to trial. I am sure I will be found not guilty when the State finishes its case, because there is no proof that could make a fair court find me guilty."
"I ask the State to show any evidence that I was involved in these crimes, whether directly or indirectly. I can say for certain that I was not involved," he said in his affidavit.

Matlala claims Tebogo contacted him after the attempted hit

Matlala also claimed that he knew about Thobejane's attempted murder through social media, and also accused her of calling him several times after the hit, asking for protection since he was in the security industry.

He said:

"This is a specific victim who contacted me multiple times after the shooting, seeking my help and protection due to my role in the security industry. She contacted me from October 2023 through June 2024.

"I suggest the State verify this with the victim and advise her to avoid contacting me directly or indirectly, as I am now involved in this case. I have never met or conspired with anyone to plan or carry out the shooting or killing of the victims listed in the charge sheet—or anyone else.
