Former reality TV star Mel Viljoen has publicly questioned why her husband Peet Viljoen was denied bail, after news broke that suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi had been arrested for a fourth time — yet remained out on bail in three separate cases.
Mel reshared a Netwerk24 post on Instagram on Thursday, 6 August 2026, announcing Mkhwanazi's latest arrest. Alongside it, she wrote:
"3 sake en borg vir al 3. Maar NIE Peet Viljoen?" — meaning "3 cases and bail for all 3. But NOT Peet Viljoen?"

Why was Julius Mkhwanazi arrested again?
Mkhwanazi was arrested on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, in connection with the murder of Emmanuel Mbense, who was killed in April 2022. He was taken into custody alongside four other suspects.
According to Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Lizzy Suping, the five accused are alleged to have played a role in the murder, the dumping of Mbense's body at Spaarwater Dam in Duduza, Nigel, and in failing to report a crime. They face charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice.
The group appeared before the Brakpan Magistrate's Court on 6 August 2026.
Mel Viljoen draws comparison to Peet Viljoen's case
Mel's frustration stems from the contrast she sees between Mkhwanazi's repeated bail approvals across three cases and Peet's situation. The post drew attention online as Mel continues to advocate publicly for her husband amid their own ongoing legal battle.
Peet and Mel Viljoen became subjects of widespread media coverage following their arrest in the United States on shoplifting charges, as well as separate legal proceedings in South Africa.
Mel Viljoen claims Peet Viljoen was targeted
Meanwhile, Briefly News previously reported Mel Viljoen sat down for a podcast interview where she made a bombshell claim about why her husband Peet was arrested.
She alleged that Peet was the whistleblower who exposed criminal activities linked to the JBC, not a perpetrator.
