On 13 August 2026, a social media user posted separate photos of the two singers side by side, both taken at the age of 24. In one image, Tyla held up her second Grammy; in the other, Rihanna posed alongside Diddy. The intention appeared to be highlighting a difference in how far each artist had come at the same age.
The post did not go unanswered for long. A Rihanna fan account stepped in swiftly to correct the record, writing: "Rihanna actually won 6 Grammys by the age of 24." That single response was enough to throw petrol on an already smouldering flame, with supporters on both sides piling in.
At 24, the South African star made history as the youngest African artist to win a Grammy Award, securing back-to-back wins for Best African Music Performance with Water and Push 2 Start. She also smashed records when Water became the first song by a South African soloist to enter the US Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years, along with collecting multiple MTV VMAs and BET Awards.

The latest clash is not happening in isolation. It follows a moment at the Met Gala that set the internet alight, when footage showed Tyla and Rihanna standing in close proximity without acknowledging each other. The Water hitmaker's supporters ran with the footage, insisting that Rihanna deliberately snubbed the South African singer, possibly out of jealousy. Neither artist has publicly addressed the speculation, which has only given both fan bases more room to speculate.

The narrative got another layer when Pitchfork published a piece describing Tyla as Rihanna's replacement during the Umbrella singer's extended break from music.
