Uzalo actor Mbuso Zulu has pulled back the curtain on a childhood defined by crime, absence, and generational incarceration. In a resurfaced clip from the Skeem GP podcast, the ex-convict from KwaZulu-Natal disclosed that prison is almost a family tradition on his father's side.

A grandmother behind bars

Zulu, 34, told Skeem GP that his paternal grandmother was sentenced to 10 years in prison for selling marij*ana, leaving her children largely unsupervised. His grandfather, a polygamist who was seldom home, offered little by way of stability. That absence pushed his father, Mafuku Themba Ncanana, towards crime as a means of survival.

According to Daily Sun, Despite not blaming his father directly, Mbuso acknowledged that the stories surrounding Ncanana's lifestyle were the pull that eventually led him down the same road. Before Ncanana passed away, he reportedly urged his son to put education first, making clear he did not want Mbuso to follow in his footsteps.

Life after prison

Mbuso's story has taken a dramatically different direction since his release in September 2024. He joined the cast of SABC 1's Uzalo, playing a character known as Cash Money, and has since channelled his past into purpose. He founded the Usengashintsha Foundation and works as a brand ambassador for Xap Xap Clothing.

The Facebook clip, shared by Chromocloud, has reignited conversation about how deeply entrenched family environments can shape a person's path, and what it takes to break that cycle.
