Bathong, music lovers and media people were left saddened after the South African Music Awards (SAMA) bosses made a shocking announcement on social media.

According to Daily Sun, the highly anticipated annual awards, which will be celebrating their 31st anniversary of honouring musicians and pioneers of the entertainment industry, stunned many netizens after they announced that they'll be moving their nominee announcement ceremony virtually this year.

In an Instagram post they shared, it was revealed that the ceremony will be streamed live on YouTube on Thursday, 28 August 2025. This came as a shocker, as every industry person knows that the SAMA nominee announcements are all about the red carpet and champagne.

Speaking to the publication, RiSA CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi shared that the awards ceremony isn't just about the trophies but about a legacy, impact and stories artists tell the nation through music.

He said:

"The SAMAs go beyond just awarding trophies; they represent legacy, influence, and the stories we share as a nation through music. In our 31st year, we stay dedicated to honouring the voices that have shaped our culture and the rhythms that move our people.
"Announcing the SAMA 31 nominees during Women's Month is more than a date; it's a celebration of women's leadership, resilience, and accomplishments. We recognise women in areas where they have often been overlooked, sending a strong message to future generations."

SAMA also announced the nominee ceremony date on their Instagram page and wrote:

"It’s official: The countdown to SAMA31 official nominee reveal has begun. Who’s in? Who’s dominating? And who’s about to make history? Get ready - the nominees for the South African Music Awards are about to drop. 28 August 2025, it all goes down. SAVE THE DATE! SAVE THE LIVE STREAM, see link in bio!"

Tyla bags 4 major SAMAs

In November 2024, Cassper Nyovest felt Tyla's international awards showed that she was deserving of some of the most significant SAMA accolades.

The SAMAs dubbed Tyla the Best Newcomer, Female Artist of the Year, International Achievement and Pop Song of the Year, all awarded to her in absentia. Tyla expressed gratitude for the wins at the SAMAs and said she could not be there as she was filming a music video.
