A scaled-back London Fashion Week opened with catwalk shows on Friday but without after-show parties following the death of Queen Elizabeth II and with a pause planned for her funeral next week. But the death of the queen, aged 96, on September 8 has seen the industry showpiece scaled-back, with high-fashion brands including Burberry and Raf Simons cancelling their shows.

The West African state of Guinea on Friday announced that the long-awaited trial over a 2009 massacre will begin on September 28, 13 years to the day after an event that marked a turning point in its history. On 28 September 2009, a group of NGOs and opposition parties organised a rally at a stadium in the capital Conakry.

Many things are on pause while Britain mourns Queen Elizabeth II, but the concerns of shoppers at a popular London market highlighted that the cost-of-living crisis was not among them. In the midst of the tributes to Elizabeth II, a few rare voices regretted that politicians were focussed on her death and parliament paused despite the urgency of the economic crisis.
