People came out in droves, singing and holding candles in Soweto for a young woman who was brutally murdered. A video of the heartbreaking scene was shared on 13 November 2025, showing the moving night vigil for Lebohang Sikwane. @thekgali_ posted the video showing people all coming together to hold a candlelight service and night vigil for the 39-year-old woman. Many held up boards protesting, stating that they want justice for the woman.

According to the Soweto Urban, the Sikwane family were in shock as they tried to process the brutal death of their daughter. Her body was found by community members near Masekhene Primary School in Meadowlands Zone 3, Soweto, on 10 November. She had been missing since the afternoon of 8 November, when she was last seen after attending a funeral. When she didn’t come home that night, her family and neighbours immediately knew something was wrong.

People in the community later mentioned hearing a wheelie bin being dragged down the street early that morning, leading towards the spot where her body was found. When her body was discovered, she had a head injury that looked like a gunshot wound, a broken wrist, and bruises. There was also a trail of blood leading from where she was found back towards her street, Itumeleng Street, and ending near a house close by.

Violence against women in South Africa

According to crime stats shared by the DA, the numbers from July to September 2024 show just how much violence women and children in South Africa are facing. In just three months, 957 women were killed, and 106 of those cases were linked to domestic violence. There were also 1,567 attempted murders of women, with 232 happening in their own homes.
